From Oregon Flora, Gardening with Natives:
Ponderosa pine is a handsome evergreen with cinnamon-colored bark that produces a soft vanilla scent when sun-warmed. Common east of the Cascade crest, individuals can live 500 years or more and survive droughts, harsh winters, and even high water, potentially growing over 200 feet tall. Variety benthamiana is adapted to the wetter Willamette Valley; select the variety appropriate to your garden’s location. When planting be sure to provide plenty of space for both spreading branches and its deep root system.
